How to choose the right Mixer Grinder; Buying Guide

From a little kid to an adult, everybody knows what a mixer grinder is. Especially in our Indian homes, we all have grown up listening to the high-pitch grinding noise of a grinder, while somebody at our place was preparing that yummy coriander chutney to go with the dosas or pureed tomatoes and onions to make a spicy curry. Mixer grinder is definitely one of the most basic appliances, but one that we absolutely cannot do without!

Now, if you are a novice when it comes to buying a mixer grinder, we assure you that the details mentioned in this article will certainly help you choose the right one for you.

So, read on!

1. Types of mixers and grinders

Commonly, there are two types of mixer grinders available in the market:
• Stand Mixers
• Traditional mixers

A stand mixer is powerful enough to mix various elements. These mixers are commonly used for whipping cream and kneading dough.

On the other hand, stand mixers are rarely used in kitchens, but are largely found in bakeries, food factories and other food industries.

2. Size/Number of Jars

You need to know the size of the grinder jar. For instance, if you have more members in your family, you will need a heavy-duty mixer grinder with large jars. The more jars you have, the versatile will be your grinding. So you should choose a mixer that offers you multiple jars. Normally, a mixer grinder will have two separate jars for dry and wet grinding.

Go for a mixer that has at least 3 jars, so you can use them for various uses. This is ideal if you’re preparing several dishes and you will not have to run around washing them. Make sure that the jar has a rubber or hard plastic handle for a good grip with lids that are toughened and durable enough to use daily.

Mixer Jars: Home & Kitchen

Food processors are indeed a wise choice if you are looking to buy a multi-purpose mixer. There are jars of different capacities along with food processors, and they also come with interchangeable blades. Some brands also offer mixers having a feeding tube, so you can add ingredients one-by-one while you’re using them. You also get a juicer jar in most cases, which help extract fruit and vegetable juices.

3. Power

Another major thing to keep in mind while purchasing a mixer grinder is its power consumption. Higher wattage is ideal for grinding tougher ingredients and at a faster speed. Anything from a 500 W to 750 W is good enough for an Indian kitchen.

4. Speed

The RPM of a mixer grinder is also an important deciding factor, as it tells you how fast the blade can rotate in a minute. For a domestic mixer grinder, anything from 18000 to 23000 RPM is good enough. A juicer mixer grinder will ideally require low to medium RPM for working efficiently. At a higher RPM, liquids or spices may not be blended or grinded effectively.

Look for quality mixer grinders that have speed control knob/switch to change the settings as per requirement.

5. Overload Protection

Sometimes we tend to fill our mixer jars while grinding or run the mixer for a very long time at a stretch, in such cases, there is a risk of burning the mixer’s motor because of the overload pressure. To avoid such a scenario, some mixer grinder brands feature an overload protection function that acts as a circuit breaker in case of overload, and further prevents the machine from damaging or breaking down.

6. Maintenance

If you are a low maintenance person and do not really like a lot of cleaning jobs, you should avoid buying mixer grinders having too many jars and equipments. A simple jar or two model might be the easy choice for you.

7. Budget

Last but not at all the least! The price of your mixer grinder will depend upon the features it offers along with the overall quality. There are some inexpensive options in the market, but they may not have the best features.
